Ladies & Gentlemen, children of most ages, please welcome our new mascot, the Happy Medic.
He comes to us from well known artist Paul Combs of Art Studio Seven, Fire Engineering Magazine and a post not long ago about how moving his political cartoons are.
When I commissioned the new guy I gave Paul some basic requirements, but asked him to look through the website and watch #CoEMS to get what Happy is all about.
When the proofs came back I knew I had contacted the right guy.
Happy wears his helmet, of course, which bears the number 5, a tribute to the Engine Company I was assigned to on that day back in 2007 when I got hurt, the injury that started me blogging.
His badge shows the star of life encircled by the maltese cross, very fitting indeed, and he’s wearing a smart uniform.
And, of course, that smile.
Happy did very well learning the ropes and will be taking his place in the banner very soon. But for now, we here at Happy medic Head Quarters welcome him, and you to the site.
Stick around, we’ve got a lot of fun stuff coming up in April.
Also on The Happy Medic…
- A retirement…of sorts – March 29, 2010
- Talk about Tactical Pants and they talk about you – January 15, 2010
- A reminder on uniforms… – October 5, 2009
- Happy’s Training Continues – April 1, 2010

Will this be available any time soon as a bobble head?

Very glad to have Happy aboard. And looking forward to his many adventures.
Very impressed, he makes CoEMS stand tall. Tell Paul he is a genius!
Not a bad idea at all!
Very nice!
Great artwork! I'm with NCIntermediate, we need bobble heads.
Get drawing but I would like to meet this Happy Medic or is he like a Unicorn, great to look at and imagine but totally mythical.
I dunno, he looks like he's got about 10 years on you. But definitely ruggedly handsome.
But you already have met me – surely you've seen the Chronicles of EMS? http://chroniclesofems.com ? Although I do also have a horn and magical powers. Wait, that came out wrong.
Wait, wait, wait…why is the janitor from Scrubs the inspiration for your avatar That doesn't make any sense!
That's really a great redesign! I look forward to him appearing in the banner… and maybe some mugs… some t-shirts… you know all the schwaggy stuff we know and love!
Happy – there is medicine for this.
He looks awesome Happy. Glad to have him on board. I will miss the old happy. Hopefully he will make occasional guest appearances.
Justin,
I must say that I feel as though you have hit a new realm in blogging with this redesign of your “guy”. Paul Combs…really? Did you have to set the bar that high? I am looking at “the eyes” and wondering why I am so 1 dimensional now. Damn you Happy…damn you.
I love the new look. I must admit that when I saw you were retiring the other happy I thought you were nuts. Now I realize your genius!
I am copying you. Maybe not now, maybe not in the near future, but sometime in the future. Look for the most evil looking skull on top of a 5'7″ frame soon!!!
Happy –
Late to the party, but I needed to drop my .02 for you.
Like FC said, when you announced you were retiring the old Happy, I thought you had lost it. Then you unveil THIS. This masterpiece/work of art. I could tell it was Paul Combs without ever reading this post. I am very jealous indeed.
I too, think that the new Happy should be available for purchase on a t-shirt, as David has suggested. I'd be proud to tote you around on my back. Wait, that came out wrong. Erm… You know what I mean.
Congrats on the new guy, and let the old guy in on some fun every once in awhile.
